課程概述

This course introduces basic principles of classical mechanics using the standard textbook by Goldstein-Poole-Safko. It starts with Newton's law and covers variational principle, canonical formalism and Hamilton-Jacobi theory. Important applications to the problems of central force, rigid body, oscillation will be discussed in detail. It also covers special relativity and an introduction to field theory.

1 Survey of elementary principles
2 Variational principles and Lagrange's equations
3 The central force problem
4 Kinematics of rigid body motion
5 Rigid body equation of motion
6 Oscillations
7 Special theory of relativity
8 The Hamilton equations of motion
9 Canonical Transformations
10 Hamilton-Jacobi theory, Action angle variables
11 (skipped) classical chaos
12 Canonical perturbation theory
13 Continuous systems and fields

課程目標
Classical Mechanics affords students an opportunity to realize the structure of physics, master the tehcniques of derivation and offers solid training on problem-solving. It can also serve as a springboard for advanced study modern physics and field theory.
